For almost three decades, Scott Patton has travelled the world, working on stages and in studios with some of the music industry’s most successful artists. As both a guitarist and a music producer, his prowess and creativity have been heard on radios, TV’s, and streaming apps by millions and millions of people world-wide.

Currently, he is the Musical Director and lead guitarist for singer/songwriter/actress Jennifer Nettles. Scott produced and played guitar on her newest song, “Sassy On Sunday”, which was prominently featured in the HBO hit comedy, “The Righteous Gemstones”

Since 2004, Scott has been the Lead Guitarist and Band Leader for the Grammy award winning Country music sensation, Sugarland. Over the last two decades, he has worked with Jon Bon Jovi, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Butch Walker, and far too many people to name here.

In this interview, we get into Scott’s history as part-owner of the illustrious Exocet Studios in Atlanta, GA where he worked on a ton of great albums.

Additionally, Scott and Brian are both playing on the upcoming single from Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Mark Kovaly entitled “Some Days”, which hits all of the digital music services in May 2022.

Today, Brian takes the first half of the show to discuss the importance of building and cultivating long-lasting professional relationships. Rick’s recording credits over the last 50 years are too long and numerous to list here but a few of those artists whose albums Rick has played on include Paul Davis, Ben E. King, Air Raid (produced by Eddie Kramer), Sandra Hall, Vassar Clements, Kevn Kinney, Mose Jones, Grammy nominated Soul singer Howard Tate, Producer Jerry Ragavoy, and many more.

Rick is also the guitarist on the 80’s smash hit “PacMan Fever” by Buckner & Garcia.

In addition to his studio work, Rick has been an in-demand freelance guitarist for live gigs as far back as the late 60’s. Some of the marquee artists that Rick has worked for include The Tams and Lotsa Poppa.

For several years throughout the 2000’s, Brian and Rick worked together in an Atlanta-based wedding/corporate band called The Interactive Band which featured female vocalist Susan C. Bennett (who the world now knows as the Original Voice of Siri).

For the first 9 months of 2021, Brian and today’s guest, Atlanta-based bassist (and spy movie cue composer) Kris Dale toured in a van playing with a regional tribute band. But, their friendship extends well over a decade including playing gigs together and recording on studio projects as freelancers. Most recently, they’ve been in the studio working on the next single from singer/songwriter Mark Kovaly.

After graduating with a Studio Music/Jazz degree from the University of Miami in 1997, Kris moved back to his hometown of Atlanta and immersed himself in the jazz and blues scene. Years of backing such artists as Mike Geier (Puddle’s Pity Party), Bernadette Seacrest, Greasepaint and Rudy Ray Moore led Kris to road work with Geoff Atchison and Delta Moon. Five years on the road with Col. Bruce Hampton, the grandfather of the jam scene, followed. A dip into bluegrass territory with the Mosier Brothers (formerly Blueground Undergrass) was a wonderful return to the upright bass.

The past decade, Kris has been bringing the low end across the country with Corey Smith, a mainstay at the CMA festival and one of the hardest working road bands out there. Finding time for a more personal outlet, Kris has released 4 records under his own name and contributed electric and upright bass, steel guitar and even theremin tracks to countless albums of others.

On this episode, Brian and Kris discuss:

Scores of musicians, audio engineers, music producers, and the assorted types of staffers that support these music industry professionals all over the globe have suddenly found themselves out-of-work due to the Coronavirus epidemic.

Since the vast majority of them are members of the “gig economy”, there is no corporation or company that will be taking care of them during this time or ensuring that each person continues to receive an income so that they can pay for rent / mortgage, utilities, groceries, and other essentials during this crisis.

So, it has fallen upon each individual to find ways to replace that lost income by brainstorming to discover, build, or divine new methods of making money utilizing whatever knowledge, skills, and resources that he / she has on-hand currently.

In this episode, Brian goes through some of the ideas that he has come up with to try and replace some of his lost income. Additionally, he gives you some questions that you can ask yourself which might help you uncover new ways to make money during this time.

Ultimately, the hope of this episode is to help you find a way to avoid or minimize the devastating effects that a global event like this will have on your life and income in the future.

Justin Varnes’ Bio:

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Justin Varnes began studying music at 10 – on the trumpet. His father – an avid jazz listener – exposed him to Stan Kenton, Nat “King” Cole, and Erroll Garner. After attending Douglas Anderson School of the Arts on trumpet, Justin studied drum set with Ray Charles alumnus Rick Kirkland. Then he studied music at the University of North Florida under Charlotte Mabrey, Bill Prince, and Bunky Green while continuing to take privately from Rick Kirkland. After graduating with degrees in jazz studies and percussion, Justin relocated to New York City where he continued to study at the New School and study privately with Jojo Mayer. In New York, Justin began touring with Phoebe Snow, with whom he performed on the Roseanne Barr Show, as well as National Public Radio’s “World Cafe” (Justin would later perform on “World Cafe” with “Five for Fighting”).

While in New York, Justin also studied with Vernel Fournier, Reggie Workman, and Joe Chambers. Outside of private lessons, he received a healthy education on Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Small’s listening to Kurt Rosenwinkle (with Jeff Ballard) and the Sam Yahel Trio (with Brian Blade). He also developed musically through regular rehearsing and performing in groups led by Coby Brown, Oscar Perez, Bob Reynolds, Nate Shaw, and Doug Wamble.

Currently residing in Atlanta, GA, he splits his time performing and teaching at Georgia State University. In Atlanta he performs with Audrey Shakir, Kevin Bales, Mace Hibbard, Joe Gransden, and Gary Motley.
